This is really a big deal for me since I am not a big fan of reading online.
I have always loved reading but the thing that I enjoy the most, is reading with a book in your hand, curled up somewhere. With out the book physically being there with me, sad to say, the reading experience is just not that complete for me.
That's the main reason why I haven't read much manga or hardly finished a title at all. The most I was able to read was 30 chapters. XDD
But this Manga is different.
It all started because I was extremely bored and dissatisfied with something.
I was browsing through Deviant Art, getting myself lost in my favorite artists's pages, I found myself reading a journal entry by Green Makakas, they were planning to do a Monster cosplay.
The series was completely unfamiliar but knowing the Green Makakas group, I was sure it was something worth seeing /reading.
I searched online and found the manga, I was hesitant as the art was not that visually appealing for me, the style shouted old school, but never the less I gave it a shot and I am happy I did!
The story is just so gripping that I was able to finish all 162 Chapters in four (4) days (while at work, mind you! hhahahahaha). This is quite a feat as 30 chapters maximum is as far as I can go!
Now to what I have to say about the manga, Monster.
MONSTER
Alternative Name: Unknown and should not be confused with Monsters (Monster with an S manga)
Genre: Thriller, Suspense, Mystery, Psychological, Drama, Seinen ~ CONTAINS EXPILICIT CONTENT
Year of Release: 1994
Status and Number of Chapters: Completed with 162 Chapters
Author: Urasawa Naoki
Artist: Urasawa Naoki
Synopsis:
The story is set during the 1980s, it starts in Eisler Memorial Hospital in Düsseldorf and continues to go around parts of Europe.
Dr. Kenzo Tenma is a brilliant Japanese doctor who has a promising career ahead of him. He is a young and talented brain surgeon who is said will revolutionize his field because of his skill. He has a beautiful fiancee and is due for a well deserved promotion in his hospital, his patients love him and peers envy him. What more could he ask for?
Everything changes for the worst for Dr. Tenma when he decides that he doesn't want to be caught up in the politics of the medical world. Going against the direct order of his hospital head and the advice of peers, he makes the decision of prioritizing the life of a wounded little boy over the town's mayor. The boy survives but the mayor does not.
Soon things go down hill, he faced ridicule and abuse from his peers, he loses the promotion and Eva, his fiancee.
But a series of killings that seem to benefit Dr. Tenma occurs, although he has no involvement to these, evidence point to him as the primary suspect.
Things quiet down but Dr. Tenma's beliefs are shaken when he finds out that the young boy whose life he saved, has grown up to be the Monster, the one behind all the mysterious and emotion-less killings.
Dr. Tenma goes out to search who is really behind these murders not to just to clear his name and mind but also to save lives.
My comments:
This is not something for the young! This manga is for 18 years old and above because of the content.
There is some nudity and very heavy topics that aren't for children.
The story is gripping, it makes you want to read and read and not let go until you find out who and why.
There is a lot of twists and the characters are unique and deep. Exciting, intriguing and somehow confusing.
The art? Well, it shouts old school but it is decent and actually nice, love the parts when it is in story book mode. The story is more than enough to make you want to read it.
It is a great manga worth reading, it makes your mind alive. If you loved Death Note and Code Geass, I am sure you'd love Monster's story, too! I am no longer wondering why the Green Makakas group loved this series so much!
Monster gets ♦♦♦♦♦ out 5 from me!
Awesome story that will make you forget that you need to go to the bathroom FTW!
I would also have to admit that I really liked Dr. Tenma belief that "All lives are equal", it maybe hard to accept sometimes because of all the politics going around but if you think about it, all lives SHOULD be equal.
No ones wants to be forgotten, we all want to be loved and remembered. That is probably why everyone wants to be unique, having our own identity is the first step to being remembered.
Monster is just too awesome, thanks so much to the Green Makakas Group! >3<

"All lives are equal"
ReplyDeleteI agree! In my case, even if it's a Pinoy Dog or a German Sheperd, they are both equal.. I'm intrigued how the monster looks like. If only I have the time to read. So many chapters x_x
